Readers' Corner: All About Glutathione

I don't take Glutathione because I try not to take as much medicine as possible and thank God for my parents' genes because I actually feel ok with my skin, if only my allergies will "poof" from the face of this planet!

Just because I don't take Glutathione doesn't mean I am against it!  If comes the time I would need to take it?  Why not?  But of course, just like regular medications, I strongly suggest everyone to do their own research first and check with doctors, just like make-up and skincare, different medications have different reactions to each individuals!

Last year, I got random emails and Cbox queries regarding Glutathione pills!  First of all, I haven't tried ANY glutathione tablets and even if I did, I won't be confident enough in prescribing one!  I am not a doctor, and mind you, even doctors can give wrong prescriptions!  (Trust me, experienced it, and it was a nightmare!).

To help our readers learn more about Glutathione, I will write a bit about it based on my general knowledge about Glutathione from research and a lot of question and answer portion with other users.

At the latter part of this post, I will give you a rundown on what Glutathione brands I've seen in the market, AMW readers who have tried certain brands can freely click COMMENT and share their experiences!  Spill the beans on both positive and negative effects they've experienced!  It's going to be educational!  I love it, now, let's keep the ball rolling!

**Note from Author:  All information are base on research done online, please purchase medications or products mentioned in this post at your own discretion.  If side effects occur, stop intake immediately and  have yourself checked with a trusted doctor.

What is Glutathione?
Glutathione is known to be a very good anti-oxidant that cleans the liver by taking off free-radicals. The most advisable dosage to use as anti-oxidant is around 10-20mg/kg per Body Weight.  If skin whitening is what you're looking for the advisable dosage is 20-40mg/kg per Body Weight.

What are the side effects?
The known side effect of Glutathione is skin whitening if taken with higher dosage.

These are the approximate duration to see the whitening effect base on your current skin color ---
Medium brown skin: 1-3 months
Dark brown skin: 3-6 months
Very dark skin: 6-12 months
Black skin: 2years or more
**Upon reaching desired skin color, maintenance dose of 1 capsule 500mg once a day is needed.

Is there any drug interactions?
Overall, taking Glutathione tablets in reasonable amounts appear to be quite safe.  Although base on research, I've read that people with milk protein allergies should avoid taking glutathione.  So the answer is, yes!  There are certain medications that cannot be taken together with Glutathione.  Kindly check with your doctor.

What is the role of Vitamin C in taking Glutathione orally?
The addition of vitamin C about 500-2000mg/day has shown to significantly increase the level of GSH red cell blood count In simpler terms, Vitamin C can boost glutathione level in the blood which makes it easier to lighten up the skin color.

Here are some of the brands visibly seen either TV and radio commercials, print ads or flyers!  Again, I haven't tried ANY of the items mentioned below, just for reference.

1. Mosbeau - with key ingredients like Placental protein, Asparagus Extract, Vitamin C, Collagen and Glutathione.  Mosbeau whitens skin while rejuvenating skin cells and removing harmful toxins from the body.

2. Belo Nutraceuticals - this latest offering fromt he powerhouse brand harnesses whitening and anti-aging in one capsule.  It's infused with glutathione and collagen precursors and provides an added bonus: A healthy dose of Vitamin C.

3. Cosmo Skin - contains Primeform Glutathione which effectively inhibits formation of eumelanin (dark melanin) and synthesizes Phaeomelanin (light melanin).
 4. Met Tathione - A certified Japanese treasure, Met helps strengthen the immune system, removes toxins from the liver and protects the body from free radical damage.
Other skin whitening options include Vita Pack, KB Kyusoku and Slim & White.

There are gazillion more products out there but at the end of the day, pollution, smoking, alcohol can make your skin suffer!  I am a strong believer of eating right, exercising and application of a good sunblock lotion helps in making your skin beautiful!

All products mentioned can be found at Beauty Within areas at the SM Beauty Section of SM Makati, SM Megamall, SM Mall of Asia, SM North Edsa and SM Fairview.

  1. What a coincidence! I've been getting the summer insecurities flu for a couple of days and successfully persuaded myself (this morning)to buy something for my skin (Glutathione to be exact). ^__^ Great share!

  2. I used to take Glutathione for health reasons. I suffer from all sorts of ailments and whenever I'd get colds, it would take me a month to heal. When I started taking Glutathione, my colds would only last for a day or two and I felt really good. Unfortunately, I had to stop because I started noticing that I'm turning into one of those Twilight things...hehe. (Skin started getting paler and paler. That was why at some point, I got obsessed with bronzers.)

  3. just a quick note... women, who take glutathione and retinol, have significantly higher risk of having a child with physical abnormality, and definitely not for pregnant women!

  4. I haven't taken Glutathione because I am satisfied with my skin so far. But I guess it's more on being scared of the long term effects it might have on me. I may not see those while taking the pills but might later own show up. I'm not confident about taking pills that were not prescribed so I decided to not jump into the bandwagon. :)

  6. my sister in law took glutathione as prescribed by her physician [she has a thyroid condition and diabetes]. it was prescribed more so for increased healing and for her cells to last longer which is the basic function. she claims she felt better while her privates [as in the tips of her twin girls on her front] turned more pink. LOL apart from that i have no anecdotal 'evidence' to relay.
what i do dislike is being accused of taking the drug and injections when i don't. so it's a reverse prejudice? i'm an nc20-25 naman not like nicole kidman :P sorry nagrant tuloy.
by all means if a doctor prescribes this then why not? <3

  8. Kai, I'm glad it was a good timing for me to write this post :) Thanks for reading! Where you able to buy? Which brand?

Skysenshi, lol, I don't want to turn into Twilight character either! But thanks for sharing your experience! Which brand did you take? If you don't mind sharing?

Dustbunny, thanks for sharing, that's why I am wary to try any medications without doctor's advise because we, as women need to take care of our body because we need to give birth in the future!

  9. Pammy, same as you, I am scared of long term effects! And thank goodness I am happy with my skin color! If there comes a time I may need this to protect my liver and its doctor's advise, I may reconsider!

Michelle, yup! The whitening is the side effect na!

  15. I do have to add, soaps with glutathione do nothing to whiten the skin. Glutathione has to pass through the liver in order to get its effects.
