AskMeMom: How to Get Toddler to Brush Teeth

I never thought that day will arrive!  I've tried all sorts of tricks to make my son brush his own teeth!  Until this fateful day....

Before we go into that, well, the struggle is REAL when it comes to brushing your toddler's teeth!  I'm not sure about you but I envy moms who post photos of their toddlers holding a toothbrush with a smile brushing their own teeth!

"What's wrong with my kid?"

Well, nothing's wrong!  I realized that in every activity we want our kid to learn, it has to be a fun journey for him!  Just to share to you, I've tried ALL sorts of "FUN" activities.

Example:
  • Playing "Brush Your Teeth" videos on Youtube while I try to brush his teeth.
  • Sing to him "Brush Your Teeth" song to him with crazy facial expressions and actions while I try to brush his teeth.
  • Purchase him all sorts of "cool" toothbrushes.
  • Purchase him all sorts of flavored toothpaste.
  • Have someone hold his face and arms as I forcefully brush his teeth (Okay, this isn't fun for both of us but I'm desperate guys!)

Then I realized, the characters I purchase him aren't really his favorites!  He doesn't even know who those characters are!  So, my son may not be the kid who likes to watch cartoons (he's into educational videos still!)  I realized, there's one video that never fail to make him laugh EVERY time!

THIS!!!

So off we try for a Minions Toothbrush and toothpaste!  They have 2 types of toothbrushes ---

  • Junior for 2-5 years old
  • Youth for 5-9 years old

And the Minions toothpaste is Bubble Fruit flavor which tastes really yummy!  (I tried!)

So, with "ready to fail" hearts, we gave him his new Colgate Minion Toothpaste and Toothbrush and a miracle happened....

He immediately recognized the character and took both toothbrush and toothpaste from me....

 Put on toothpaste....

And brushed his own teeth!
If you can only see how "kilig" we are as parents!  We had to document it right away!
Guys, 3 years old na si Kyle!  FINALLY!

And just when we thought it was just a "honeymoon" stage because of a new toothbrush and toothpaste, look at him several days after!

The bottom suction has its' own use in a child's eye!  I used to think it is just for the sink!  I guess my son has other ideas!

I think one major reason why my son enjoyed brushing his teeth with the new Colgate Minion Toothbrush is because of the small head of the toothbrush which fits comfortably into my son's mouth!  The bristles are extremely soft and gentle when used!   Aside from that, the perfect partner Bubble Fruit flavored Sparkling Blue Gel is yummy thus tooth-brushing is definitely an easy task!

Of course, constant practice and guidance will help your toddler learn to brush his/her teeth the right way!  I went ahead and checked out the Colgate website to see fun facts on how I can make learning fun for Kyle!  Super cute articles about Oral Care for kids even I enjoyed reading them!

I can't wait to share this good news to fellow parents who have kids who are Minion fans like my son!  You can check out the Colgate site for more product info!  They even have cute toothbrushes designed for girls and boys!

Feel free to like Colgate Philippines on Facebook and follow them on Instagram.

Do you have a hard time brushing your toddler's Teeth?

What other tips can you share to fellow mommies out there?

  2. Ooh. This part dreads me a bit. My kid is 1.5 years old and I bought her a faux chewable toothbrush months ago but she seems not interested. I guess it is too early for her huh? I guess I should wait it out. Happy for u that you finally got him to brush his teeth!

  3. Hi Ms. Nikki, I also have a toddler (2 years old) and I would like to add few tips for making brushing their teeth fun and effective:
-brushing teeth together so that they will imitate us, their parents
-using only a smear of toothpaste so it's okay for them not to spit them out

Anyway, will research on this new Minions toothpaste from Colgate since our current toddler toothpaste is almost running out. :)
