#TravelMore with Smart Postpaid Surf Abroad

I recently attended an event for Smart Postaid Surf Abroad hosted by Luis Manzano and Bianca Valerio.  It was when both hosts shared about their favorite destination --- Japan, brought me back to my first ever Tokyo Japan trip.

That's me looking flabbergasted (even on back view) because it is really confusing trying to navigate yourself from one point to another especially in different language!

Japan Food Trip: Part 2

Happy Sunday dear AMW readers!  Did you have a relaxing weekend?  I did take things slowly this weekend, I will just be attending a kiddie party then go back home and lay in bed like a dead fish!  *hahaha*

Speaking of FISH!  *laughs*  And food in general, can I please continue my Japan Food Post so I can completely make YOU want to visit the country?

Last weekend, I did the first part and if you haven't read it yet, do check back by smiling and clicking HERE.

I have said it before and I will say it again, just be adventurous and you'll find yourself embracing the culture!  If you are on a budget, you do not need to sit in expensive restaurants in Japan, in between travel via subway, you may find a lot of cute Bento Boxes sold in reasonable price (considering the quantity of food you get.)

You see these at random Subway Station and food court!  (Note: To check out the price, click photo to enlarge.  Use an online currency converter to check the value in your currency.)

Bento Boxes seen at the Tokyo Station

There were around 8-10 stalls side by side and we took a long walk peeking at all the Bento Boxes we could look at!

From Pork, beef, eel, etc... I'm sure my reporting would even be better if I understand Japanese, but I don't! :( Sorry!

More Rice Boxes

Healthy salad and sandwiches

The choices were limitless!  If I live here, I wouldn't even be cooking with all the wonderful healthy food choices available anywhere you go!

We got intrigued with the brand Maisen as we see them a lot!

We bought a box and took it with us to Tokyo DisneySea!  I'm really grateful we made this decision as most restaurants in DisneySea were packed and we were too hungry to line up! So this is a great "in-between" stomach filler!

Nothing beats freshly made food but still, these are really tasty!

Just when you thought you've had enough of Bento Boxes at the Subway station, they will still be around inside supermarkets!  I have seen Japanese purchasing their dinner before going home!  I wouldn't mind doing the same thing everything looks scrumptious!

One of the "most seen" food are Pork Tonkatsu

And I tell you, that's not all!  Japanese love their sweets!  I have never seen stalls after stalls of sweets in the Philippines!

Donuts

They look like flavored pudding

Snoopy  characters

One Piece Characters
I wouldn't even dare eat them! So cute!

There are also loads of Onigiri Rice!  I just randomly pick some by reading the Kanji characters!

If you think you've had enough of Japanese snacks, there are a lot of bakeshops on various places!

I tried the Spinach and Salmon Quiche from Ueno Station and we love it so much!  It costs roughly around Php200.00 (approx $4.00).  Not bad as it's filling!

This is another random bread that I've tried.  It has ham and cheese on it and known to be the top 3 bestseller in the bakery!  I'm glad I bought these as we got hungry inside Meiji Shrine so at least, we have something to keep our tummy warm!

JPY260.00 (approx Php130.00/$3.00)

Random dumplings bought at a food court
The best tasting one is the one with crazy "plus-signed" eyes smiley!  *lol*

And if you're not the adventurous type, you can always go for fast food chains like ...
 Lotteria

McDonalds

Yoshinoya

Some random Shawarma from Harajuko

The meat is quite juicy and filled with loads of vegetables!

You can also randomly try snacks from convenience stores

And don't miss the rice cakes!

All in all, I can assure you that you won't get hungry in Japan!  You can get a nice, filling meal for around JPY500.00 (approx Php250.00/$5.80) and above.  Snacks could go from JPY200.00-JPY400.00!  You just have to look around and be open-minded to try things even though you don't understand the language!  Again, it helps to know the Japanese words for Pork, Beef, Chicken or Fish!  The rest?  There's always hand gestures and a big smile! :)

I hope you enjoyed the photos!
Are you adventurous in terms of food?

Keep smilin'
Stay happy!

Japan Food Tripping: Part 1

Happy Sunday!  How's the weekend treating you?  Me, I had a nice massage at The Spa care of our friends from Cream Silk!  They launched the new Cream Silk Perfection Hair Care system and I'll share more about it soon!

Today, is the day were I will unveil my Japan "Munching" experiences!  I originally thought of creating one huge post on all the food that I've seen, heard, touched, smelled and tasted but I got overwhelmed myself so I'm separating the Japan Food Tripping Post into..several parts!  *laughs*  I hope you understand! If you don't, well, I guess, you've got no choice?  *evil laugh*

"Japan is so expensive!"
"Instant noodles in Japan is also expensive!"

Those are some of the sentences that made me and Mr. AMW pause our dream to travel to Japan for years!  Whenever we spoke to friends or relatives who have been to Japan, I always hear them complain on how expensive it is to travel to Japan.

I won't lie --- it is expensive to travel!  Not only in Japan but to any parts of the world!  In every travel, I guess all we need to do is stick to the budget and keep that watchful eye!  You will definitely find something worthwhile!

Back to food, we were quite lucky to have breakfast included in our hotel stay plus the free Ramen every night!  I focused on the top 3 things I would like to try in Japan (aside from Takoyaki) --- Sushi, Noodles and Tonkatsu!

I am happy to report --- Mission Accomplished!

Sushi seems pricey in any parts of the world!  Thanks to my colleague who introduced this restaurant!

Itamae Sushi
Yes!  They have English Menu!
We waited a bit for our table to be ready as it was lunch time and most working people are on a rush to have their lunch!  It doesn't hurt that this restaurant have Sushi sets for 20% off!

Sushi freshly made right in front of you!

The set comes with Miso soup and salad
and of course, unlimited serving of Japanese tea!

JPY1,239 less 20% off!
JPY980 (approx Php490.00/USD11.40)

JPY1,449 less 20% off!
JPY1,100 (approx Php550.00/USD12.80)

This is the most fresh sushi I've had in my entire life!  I chowed down one after the other and I don't want to stop!  I am not exaggerating, it was THAT delicious!

**The restaurant is located at Akasaka Mitsuke a few walk after the subway station exit.

-------------------------

On to the noodles!  I'm an expert noodle eater as I prefer to eat noodles than rice!  So... *points at my tongue* You can't trick this baby! :P

At Yodobashi Akiba (Akihabara), it was lunch time so we've decided to go up to the top most floor where their food court is located!  We walked around the whole vicinity looking at food display until we saw this....

A quaint restaurant where you just have a tiny space to eat, everyone's busy eating (not much talking)!  I got a bit intimidated at first but the kind server greeted us with a HUGE smile!  (He knows my weakness! LOL)  So yeah, we got in!   (Insider info: I failed, I was yakking away on how delicious the food was!  *laughs*)

The restaurant do not have English menu but they have "pictured" menu!  Which is good enough for me!  The waiter is super friendly and I even had to take him outside of the restaurant to point at the giant poster of the noodles I want to try! *HAI*!

Though the space is tiny, Japanese are innovative, they even thought of creating a space for your bags or other belongings!

My Soup-less Noodles!
JPY780.00 (approx Php390.00/USD9.00)

Keith's Noodle Soup
JPY990.00 (approx Php495.00/USD11.50)

And they even have "extras" per meal as a promotion!  I picked additional whole egg for mine while Keith opted for larger bowl noodles (an upsize!)!  I don't know how or why but our meals were upgraded!  *yay!*

I can't even finish my bowl of noodles!  Noodles just kept multiplying!  *laughs*  Seriously, I find the price of the meal we had is quite reasonable for the amount of food we get!

**The restaurant is located on the topmost floor of Yodobashi, Akiba.
-------------
Last but not the least, I nearly gave up!  I thought I won't be able to try the famous Pork Cutlet meal that goes "oh so well" with shredded cabbage!

The restaurant is located at the Tokyo Metro Station but it looks like a posh restaurant at Greenbelt!  Good news to travelers, English Menu is available in this restaurant!!!

Fried Squid Legs
JPY280.00 (approx Php140.00/US$3.25)
Comes with lemon and sauce!  I enjoyed munching this as an appetizer and they are indeed very crunchy and tasty!

Shrimp Satsumaage
JPY280.00 (approx Php140.00/US$3.25)
Locally, this is comparable to "kikiam" but this one is less salty and the texture is smoother!  It comes with soy sauce and I enjoy eating this with hot cup of rice!

Pork Tenderloin
JPY1,260.00 (approx Php630.00/US$14.65)

The rice was an extra order, the set comes with miso soup with clams plus a tiny salad, nice serving of pork tenderloin and loads of shredded cabbage that's refillable!

In our country, the cabbage could just be there for decoration to most of us, but the right way to eat this (according to experience! hahaha) is to grab a small piece of Pork Tonkatsu together with shredded cabbage, dip a bit of the thick Worcestershire Sauce  available on each table and take ONE BIG BITE!  The tender juicy warmth taste of the pork mixed with the cool cabbage gives a wonderful "fireworks" inside the mouth!  The cabbage is full of fiber so it will help reduce the absorption of fat, at the same time, Cabbage can counteract the fatty taste that we tend to dislike each time we eat some deep fried dishes!

**The restaurant is found at Tokyo Character Street, Tokyo Metro Train Station.  I do not have the English name of the restaurant so I'm posting the photo of the exterior of the restaurant below!  Hope this help!

Overall, both Mr. AMW and myself had a wonderful time dining at Japanese restaurants/fastfood chains!  It was quite intimidating for both of us at first due to the language barrier, but with simple terms in Japanese for food like Pork, Chicken and Beef is enough to make you survive dining in Japan! :)

Which among the 3 restaurants would you like to try?

Stay happy!

Japan Report: Ueno, Shinjuku (TMG) and Roponggi Hills

How are you?  I hope you are doing well!  I guess, this is the last leg of my Tokyo Travel Report, but don't worry, I will be writing more on "How To's" especially for first time Japan Travelers like us!  I will also create a post on how to commute cheaper in Tokyo and I'm proud to say, we did not overspend because we researched a lot prior to going there!  Well, hats off to Mr. AMW for researching the most!

Of course, the weekend food tripping Japan Version will be available for you to read and "feel" on Sunday! :)

Ueno is the first station we went up to the moment we arrived from Narita Airport.  We were supposed to transfer from Ueno station to Asakusa via Hibiya Line but we ended up exiting to the streets.  It was really cold and windy that night and instead of getting worried, Mr. AMW pulled out his camera and took shots of our first "touch base" of Tokyo.

To make the long story short, we did go back to Ueno (this time, without heavy luggage) and we've decided to take a look at Ueno Park for night time Sakura watching.  Who would've thought this greeted us?

The timing of our trip was just PERFECT., this reminded me so much of Midnight Mercato back home but with the cooler weather!  Before we head on to the main "street" going towards the temple, we stopped for a quick order of Takoyaki!  I am so happy when Mr. AMW told me the seller handed the last set of Takoyaki to a beggar!  What a nice man!

Ueno Park is next to the Ueno Station.  Base on research, the park grounds were originally part of Keniji Temple, which used to be one of the city's largest and wealthiest temple.  I guess that's the reason why I can't seem to pinpoint if this is a park or a temple.  I guess it's both!

As usual, prior to going to the temple grounds, we washed our hands and rinsed our mouth.  Mr. AMW and I knew nothing about what needs to be done so we just went in together, said a silent prayer and we both made noise just like everybody else!

You can write your wishes here

We walked further down to the strip of food stalls and looked around!  We had an ocular inspection first before we decided our final buy!  *laughs*

Sweet Potato sticks (Japanese Style)

Random Yakitoris

more Yakitoris

Random meat cooked in boiling water
Just like Shabu-Shabu

Chocolate covered bananas on stick

A man making Takoyaki

Turkey Legs!

Base on the Japanese character, I don't think this is Okonomiyaki
I think this looks like egg with vegetables? *help!*

Pancakes

Aside from food, you will see random carnival games both kids and adult alike would like to try!

This is quite famous and I've seen this in a lot of animes!  You pay a certain amount and you get a scoop made of thin paper, you get the fish once you put it in the can!  It sounds difficult but the girl got 3! :)

It was perfect for us to be able to experience how Japanese celebrate or hold their festivities!

How to go to Ueno Park ---
Ueno Park is next to JR Ueno Station.  Go out of "Park Exit" and you'll see it immediately!

Next destination - Roppongi!
Roppongi Hills is located at Roppongi.  The place is quite modern and reminded me of business districts like that of Makati (local city).

Roppongi has 2 cities within the city, one is Roppongi Hills and the other one is Tokyo Midtown.  Since Japanese culture is what we're aiming for, we've decided to pick one and went for Roppongi Hills.
Roppongi Hills is known for its nightlife district and true enough, it is traveler-friendly as most restaurants or bars would have a separate English menu.

The building is quite huge and there are many facilities within the building complex.  Roppongi Hills Club, Mori Art Museum, Tokyo City View (to see the overview of Tokyo), Shops, Restaurants, Movie Theater, you ask for it, you'll get it!
 .

In here, you can book your movie tickets and even the One Piece Show.  All you need to do is book your slot and pay for the specific time and come back!  We tried checking on the next available One Piece Show but we were told only the 6:00pm slot is available and it was only 1:00pm when we asked the lady!

One Piece Show is on the 52nd floor of the Roppongi Hills and show time is only from March 20, 2012 to June 17, 2012! Entrance fee is around JPY2,000 (approx Php1,000/ $23.50)
If you can read Japanese check out www.onepiece-ten.com

And there's a weird looking public art called Maman made by sculptor Louise Bourgeois!  Okay, if you're scared of spiders I don't think you'll enjoy posing here!

Now, to those who wants to save up on paying entrance fee for city view?  Come, follow me!

Thanks to wonderful friends who recommended this place, I originally wanted to visit here just to check out Mt. Fuji, eventhough I wasn't able to see it, this is definitely a good place to start exploring Tokyo in 360 degrees view (again) FOR FREE!

Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building or TMG is located at Shinjuku!  Shinjuku area is ONE hell of a busy street but luckily, we head there on a Sunday and just in LUCK (again), the TMG observation decks are open even on weekends!  *whew*

Once you get in the TMG building, you can find the Tokyo Tourist Information Center with a whole lot maps, travel booklets, and a lot more in various languages!  There are also 2 computers available for anyone who's in need to check something over the internet!

Now on to the good stuff!  There are 2 wings to view the city of Tokyo, the North and South Observatory.  As advised by the lovely lady at the Tourist Information Center, South wing closes earlier but the viewing deck is bigger!

There were lines and there are security people who would help facilitate the guests.

At the 45th Floor, once you get out of the elevator, you will see 360 degrees of clear glass for your viewing pleasure!  I spotted Tokyo Tower right away!

Meiji Shrine
Yup, the whole green thing is the 750,000 hectares of land!

There were also posters that would show you the names of the buildings you see!  The blue arrow done by yours truly is supposed to be the area where you can see Mt. Fuji on a "lucky day"!

Keep in mind:
  • South Observatory is bigger but closes at 5:30pm (this only closes at 11:00pm on days that the North Observatory is closed)
  • North Observatory closes at 11:00pm.
  • Both observatories are open starting at 9:30am.
  • Closing days:  South closes first and third Tuesday of every month.  North closes second and fourth Monday of every month.
  • ADMISSION IS FREE!
After a relaxing viewing of the city of Tokyo, we've decided to walk around a bit and headed to the Shinjuku Chuo Park.

The park is situated in between the tall buildings at the west exit area of Shinjuku station.  Anyone can come in to relax and since it was a Sunday, we saw a lot of people enjoying Sakura viewing!

This is called "HANAMI", Hanami is the practice of picnicking under Cherry Blossoms and have lunch/dinner, drink sake and play games!  Some where even singing and dancing!

Full bloomed Sakura

Though there were a lot of people, I'm glad most of them were taking care of the garbage!  I see them throwing huge plastic bags on trash bins!

Overall, I think our trip was done in such a manner where everything went on like a breeze!  A day of relaxation like this, to walk around the city and observe what Japanese people loves to do!  Thanks to my ultimate travel partner Mr. AMW whom I shared a lot of laughs and mini arguments about the Subway station lines!  *laughs*

I have learned so much for this trip and I can't wait to go back to Japan...someday!

Out of all the reporting I've done, which place struck you the most and made you want to visit Tokyo?

Keep smilin'
Stay happy!
