How to: Fresh Make up Look Without Breaking The Bank

I am finally ready to share to you my young readers who were messaging me on a single brand makeup look that won't break the bank!

When it comes to prettifying oneself, you don't have to break the bank!  You don't have to spend a lot just to look good!  You only need a couple of things ----

  • Good quality makeup products that suits your skin tone and skin type.
  • Products that you really use on a daily basis.
Based from my own requirements, I went for San San Makeup Products (Which, by the way, can be found at HBC Stores nationwide!)

And I was surprised to see this brand expanding into 3 categories giving me more options to choose from.  From that wide range of products - I picked my favorites and went to create a look with it.

Mind you, all products from San San Cosmetics are less than Php200.00 each (affordable!).  Was able to wear them all throughout the day without worries and would you believe I applied my makeup without extra makeup brushes or tools?

My Top 10 San San Cosmetics

San San Cosmetics has been around for so many years but I haven't really tried their products until recently when the brand was kind enough to send me a box FULL of San San Cosmetics just to try their 3 categories ---

  • Classic
  • High Def
  • Age Defense

I like it when a brand create products based from the different needs of each users!  And I never discriminate products based from brand or price, I test them equally and finally picked my top 10 favorites!

Watch this video and let me know your thoughts!

Happy Tuesday AMW Friends!
I was in a mood to check my "Blog Query" folder and scroll way down and finally get to answer the "most asked" query from readers!  As the title goes, it's all about long-lasting blushin' today!

Who doesn't like their blush to last until makeup removal?  I know I do!  Here are some of the makeup brands that I've tried (and tested) on both myself and clients!  They're mentioned here because they passed!

AMW Reviews: SanSan Matte Finish Liquid Foundation

Since my blog is called AskMeWhats, it isn't a surprise to get loads of queries over email!  Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining, I actually like sharing and learning at the same time!

One of the most asked question to date, aside from Makeup Schools, is a suggestion on a good yet inexpensive foundation.  I understand the query as I used to be a student myself who works part time on the side tutoring kids to earn extra money for my own "fashion and beauty" wants.

Today, I will be reviewing an inexpensive liquid foundation from San San.

San San says ---
San San Matte Finish Liquid Foundation is available in Four variants that match most Filipina skin tones.  The nude to natural shades offer medium coverage that provides an even finish to help conceal blemishes and dark under eye circles.  Its formulation is ideal for those with normal to dry skin.

Each bottle of San San Matte Finish Liquid foundation comes in a matte frosted glass container with a spatula for easier application plus Vitamins A, C and E that nourish skin and SPF15 for sun protection.

Ingredients

AMW says ---
Pros
  • Includes manufacture and expiration date.

  • Comes with a spatula that's convenient stored inside the bottle.
  • Build-able coverage.
  • Gives a matte finish.
  • Non-drying.
  • Did not irritate my skin.
  • Since the product is inexpensive, it is still okay to purchase at least 2 shades for mixing.
  • Has a tiny hint of "coconut" scent that smells nice.
  • Gives a nice, even coverage.

Cons
  • As stated on the product packaging, this is made in P.R.O.C. (People's Republic of China), I'm not sure how comfortable some of you are in using China made products.
  • Limited shades.  (Please read tips on how to deal with this)
  • Scent: those who dislikes scent on foundation may find it annoying.

Overall
For its price, this is an impressive matte foundation that doesn't dry the skin.  Long-lasting and comes with a scent that lasts a bit.

Tips
  • Use the spatula to get sufficient amount of product and transfer on your clean hands or a "plate" before application.  Never apply from spatula directly onto your skin.
  • Experiment with the best tool to apply your SanSan Matte Finish Liquid Foundation --- clean fingers, foundation brush, stippling brush, sponge, etc...
  • Since the price is inexpensive, feel free to purchase a light and dark one to mix and match.  A bit of a hassle but so far it's working on me.
  • Best used for girls who are studying makeup!  This is an inexpensive foundation great for practice yet it gives the coverage needed.
  • If you have super oily skin, prime your skin with an oil-control primer prior to foundation application.
  • If you managed to purchase a light and dark foundation for mixing, feel free to use the light foundation as a highlighter!  01 is a favorite of mine to highlight the bridge of my nose and other areas.

Will I repurchase?
I wouldn't mind recommending this to girls who are on a budget and are starting on makeup.

To whom do I recommend this to?
Girls who wants to try matte finish liquid foundation without breaking the bank.  This product works well for normal, combination and dry skin.

Where to purchase and how much?
Visit www.hbc.com.ph or add them up on Facebook.  Available in all HBC stores nationwide for Php132.00 (approx $3.00).

Product photos

01 03 and 04 on packaging
Comes with a spatula for hygienic purpose

Swatch on arm
01 Is a matte ivory shade with hint of yellow
03 Would match most Filipina skin, has yellow undertone.  Equivalent to MAC Studio Fix Liquid Foundation in NC35.
04  Has pink undertone.

With a mix of 01 and 03, I came up with this to match my skin color

Build-able coverage
From light to medium heavy

Once blended on skin
It disappears and gives a good coverage without showing up lines
Does not flake my dry skin.

Applied on face
Please do not mind the weird grayish color of the after shot (R), the photo was taken under same lighting.  SanSan Matte Finish Liquid Foundation gives a nice, even coverage minus the flaking.

Have you tried or seen SanSan Matte Finish Liquid Foundation?
Have you tried it?  Would you give it a try even if its made in China?

Personally speaking, I am not a brand snob, I am willing to try on products that I think would work for my skin but I make sure to do a patch test or check out the ingredients before doing so!  It is very important to let your skin breathe once in awhile and this tip is applicable for ALL Brands.  Make ups are make ups, they are chemically-laden products which may trigger breakouts to some and not to others!

AMW Reviews: San San Gel Eyeliner with Vitamin E

Eyeliners are probably invented for people like me who were born with small-looking eyes.  After years of usage, I've probably mastered the different strokes of eye lining to change the shape of my eyes from time to time.  No wonder gel liners are close to my heart because they can withstand hot and humid weather like the Philippines.

Let's not forget....I'm a crybaby!  So the battle of gel liners (or other forms of eyeliners) will always be ON!

Recently, I am trying out the most inexpensive gel liner that I own, local reader would know the brand for sure, it's from HBC under San San Cosmetics line.

San San Gel Eyeliner with Vitamin E
The shade I got is Brown
The pot is smaller than regular gel liners.
Net weight is 0.07 oz/2 grams

If you wonder why would a gel liner be packaged in such long handle?
Pull out for a surprise!

Tada!
The San San Gel Eyeliner includes a free brush!

Attach to the cap for easy handling!
Cool huh?
Now you've seen the "specs" of the exterior of the gel liner, let's move on to the real deal!

San San Gel Eyeliner with Vitamin E says ---
Nothing much written on box.
Ingredients

AMW says ---
Pros
  • Super cute and innovative packaging!
  • Well sealed upon purchase so you get them fresh from the manufacturer.
  • I appreciate the tinier gel liner packaging as I could never finish up a gel liner without them drying up on me first.
  • The free brush is actually good!
  • The shade is true brown, not reddish brown, but just plain, matte brown.
  • Since the shade is not as dark and "obvious" as regular gel liners, best used by newbies or first-time gel liner users.
  • Non-smudging nor smearing. (though it tends to disappear rather than smudge, which I prefer).
  • No weird scent.
  • Can be used to apply both thin or thick line, can also double up as an eyeshadow base for smokey-eyes.
  • Great to use on the lower lash line, shows up like a pencil liner. Very natural-looking.
  • Can be easily removed by using regular eye make-up remover.
  • Very affordable.
Cons
  •  Not as dark and pigmented as other gel liners.
  •  If you rub your eyes a lot, this gel liner tends to disappear in the middle of the day.
  • Not as waxy or applies as smoothly as compared to other gel liners.
  • I have to go through the area a couple of times to get the desired and consistent shade I want.
Overall
The San San Gel Eyeliner's texture is that of a soft crayon.  I find it very easy to apply on lids and it stays on the eyes longer than eyeliner pencils.

Tips
  • Always store in cool, dry place.
  • Try to store it upside down so the oil underneath will transfer on the top portion to prevent it from further drying.
  • If you're not comfortable with the free brush, feel free to use your preferred gel liner brush.
  • Wash the free brush before use.
  • Wipe the brush every usage with a wet tissue or spritz it with make-up cleaner.
  • Practice applying on both upper and lower lash line.  One small stroke at a time.
  • For super oily lids, use an oil-control primer prior to gel liner usage.
  • For makeup artists out there: This is actually the best liner to use for mature clients, I find the regular gel liner to look too strong on mature makeup.  Pencil liners are a bit too harsh on their lids, so this is perfect!
Will I repurchase?
Yes.

To whom do I recommend this to?
First time gel liner users or anyone who likes the natural look of an eyeliner pencil.

Where to purchase and how much?
At local HBC stores for Php115.00 (approx $2.78).  Told you, its the most inexpensive gel liner I own! (to date)
Swatch on Hand without base
First 2 lines were applied approximately with 2-3 strokes
Last 2 lines who that the gel liner is not waxy enough for it to glide from end to end.

Applied thinly on upper lash line

Applied thickly on upper lash line
Unlike other gel liners, this look like an eye shadow

Using San San Gel Eyeliner as my eyeshadow base

My L'Oreal Open Eyes Pro in Purple

shows up more vibrant and pigmented

So far, I'm giving a thumbs up for San San Gel Eyeliner because it may have some cons but the inexpensive price tag makes it a "pro" as this can be easily bought by our hardworking consumers.

Have you tried San San Gel Eyeliner with Vitamin E?
If not, what's your most inexpensive gel liner to date?

AMW Reviews: San San Soleil Matte Foundation with SPF43

One of the most inexpensive liquid foundation I currently own, San San Soleil Matte Foundation in which I got to review.  Is it worth the money?  Have I found something that works at a very affordable price?

After weeks of using this product, I've finally written my thoughts!  Keep in mind that we have different skin type and color, so please test on testers before you purchase!  I don't know how many times I stressed on that!

San San Soleil Matte Foundation says ---
  • Fits all skin types.
  • Non-greasy, light weight feel
  • Easy to apply
  • Provides a smooth, radiant finish
  • Enriched with Vitamins A, C & E
Ingredients:
AMW says ---
Pros
  • Squeeze type packaging, no product wastage.
  • No weird scent.
  • Gives a good coverage, can be controlled for light-heavy coverage.
  • Very lightweight, does not oil up in the middle of the day.
  • Dual purpose: works as foundation and a concealer.
  • No skin irritations or allergies encountered while I use this product.
  • True to what the product says...it gives a matte finish!  Matte lovers out there?  Hooray!
  • Inexpensive!

Cons
  • Can aggravate dryness, you have to moisturize well.
  • Some ingredients included in this product may cause allergic reactions to super sensitive skin.
  • Limited shades to choose from.
Overall
For its price, I am quite impressed with the quality of the said foundation under the Soleil (summer) line.  The brand lives up to its promise of creating matte, flawless looking skin without the heavy feel!

Tips
  • I know I've been nagging like crazy but please try on testers, apply on your face and leave for a couple of minutes to check shade match and if you have any allergic reactions to the product.
  • For light coverage, apply with foundation brush, start applying the center of the face spreading out.
  • For heavier coverage, apply with a sponge.
  • Use damp sponge if you want to spread the product evenly.
  • Moisturize your skin really well prior to foundation application.
  • If you want to have a barrier between your skin and this foundation, use a face primer.
  • You can mix this with your favorite moisturizer if you want more dewy finish.
  • For oily skin readers:  set this liquid foundation with your favorite oil-control powder.
Will I repurchase?
No, personal preference of mine to purchase foundation that has "dewy" finish.

To whom do I recommend this to?
Combination, Oily skinned individuals who likes the coverage of a liquid foundation.

Where to purchase and how much?
At HBC stores for Php149.75 (approx $3.50).

Less amount of product goes a long way!

Blends into my skin color and
you can see the "green veins" disappeared
on the area with check mark

As you spread on the product,
you can see how thick it gets to cover blemishes

Applied all over face without moisturizer or face primer
Though my skin looks dry, its not that bad
compared to other brands that has matte finish

Tell me your most inexpensive foundation to date!
What's the brand and does it work for you?

AMW Reviews: San San Everyday Cheek Tint

Benefit's Benetint is famous for their gorgeous cheek tints! Unfortunately, the brand is not available locally so we have to settle for other brands and I may have to say (with conviction), most of them don't come cheap!

I have tried The Body Shop's Lip and Cheek Tint and it works fabulously!  Like most cheek tints, working fast, I mean, really fast is one requirement that you should master!  Cheek tints are known to dry quickly even during application, a lot of us find it quite hard to blend!
There's actually one cheek tint brand that does not require you to work like a superhero!  San San Everyday Cheek Tint!  Read on for the rest of my review!

San San Everyday Cheek Tint says ---
For a natural-looking flush after moisturizing.
Size: 10ml
Ingredients: Aqua, Propylene Glycol, Retinyl Palmitate (Vitamin A), Ascorbyl Palmmitate (Vitamin C), Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Proply Paraben, Methyl Paraben, Phenoxyethanol.
Available in ONE shade only.

AMW says ---
Pros
  • Cute and simple packaging.
  • Well sealed upon purchase.
  • Inexpensive.
  • Doesn't dry up easily as compared to other cheek tints.
  • Gives a super natural flush.
  • Used as blush powder base, the blush powder stays a bit longer.
  • Does not trigger dryness.
  • No weird scent.
  • No skin irritations or itchiness.
Cons
  • If you want the cheek tint to show up, you have to apply a lot!
  • The brush that comes with the product is not that good.  Can't complain for the price though.
  • I find this product takes a bit longer time to dry up as compared to other brands.
  • May slide off if you have super oily skin.
Overall
Promises the natural flush the product promises!

Tips
  • Since the product shows up a bit light, I suggest applying this after your "powder foundation" or "setting powder".
  • Add the product as desired.
  • Grab a bit of product, apply it on the apples of your cheeks and gently "dab".  Dabbing will make the product show up more.
  • If you want a more obvious cheek tint, drop 4-5 drops of San San Everyday Cheek Tint on a cap, use a stippling brush to "stipple" the product on the apples of your cheeks.
  • You can top the product with your favorite powder blush.  Once the powder blush disappears, you still have a naturally colored cheek tint underneath.
  • Always stand back and check your application.
Will I repurchase?
I seldom repurchase cheek tints as it takes me forever to use up.

To whom do I recommend this to?
Anyone who is into very natural-looking blush.  People who are into "obvious" blush won't appreciate this product.  Best for normal and dry skin.

Where to purchase and how much?
Can be found on HBC site for $3.93 (approx Php168.00), or local HBC stores for less than Php200.00

One swipe, you can see how "watery" the product is

With a "patting" motion, product well distributed
and dried up into a super natural, sheer red color

Applied on cheeks without powder blush
Super light and natural

What's another inexpensive cheek tints you have tried for daily use?
Give us a shout out and I'm glad to check it out too!

AMW Reviews: San San Soleil Lip Colour

Soleil is a French term for "sun".  It's the inspiration that HBC came up with to include it in their exclusive makeup line called San San.

When I got the 3 shades of Soleil Lip Colour, I used them right away because the packaging screams SUMMER and the colors call for "Sexy Summer!"

Here's my review for one of the brightest and happiest lipstick packaging I own....

San San Soleil Lip Colour says ---
  • Comes in 3 variants - Nude Carribean, Peach Ibiza and Pink Tropics
  • Neutral shades are very suitable for summer season.
  • Enriched with Vitamins A, C & E
Ingredients: (click to enlarge)

AMW says---
Pros
  • Very cute packaging, you get the see the shade of the lipstick inside with the "peek-a-boo" packaging.
  • Inexpensive.
  • Creamy and applies smoothly.
  • You can adjust the pigmentation by applying more.
  • I usually put the limited shade availability under "con" but with this range, it's an exception!  I like the fact that they are "right on" with the 3 shades!  One on the nude side, pink then orange!
  • Has SPF25 to care for the lips.
Cons
  • The kiddie/candy-like scent!  I would prefer to have this fragrance-free!
Overall
A great start-up!  If you plan to own nude, pink and orange lipstick without breaking the bank, the San San Soleil Lip Colour is a good start!  Keep in mind that these lipsticks are on the light to medium side in terms of pigmentation.  Toned down version of those lip colors actresses use on television.

Tips
  • Dry lips? Prepare your lips by applying a good amount of lip balm or lip treatment prior to lipstick application.
  • Blot lip balm before lipstick application to prevent lipstick from sliding off.
  • After application, you can choose to press your lips on a clean tissue paper or pat it with loose powder for a matte finish.
  • If you have concerns on the ingredients, I suggest you use a "lip erase" or conceal your lips prior to lipstick application for "protection".
Will I repurchase?
Well, I got all 3 shades in the line so no need to repurchase!

To whom do I recommend this to?
Anyone who likes to try pinks, orange and nude lips without the "attention-seeking" factor.

Where to purchase and how much?

San San Soleil Collection is available in all HBC stores nationwide for Php109.75 (approx $2.55). Visit www.hbc.com.ph, or call HBC Customer Care at 9845555 local 228 / 0918-9215520.

Nude Carribean

Peach Ibiza

Pink Tropics

I can't seem to find my favorite shade out of the 3 as I alternate them depending on my mood!
Peach Ibiza is definitely "in" this summer!
