AMW Reviews: The Face Shop Oil Control Water Cushion (V201 Apricot Beige)

Guess what?  I was indeed very excited when I got The Face Shop's Oil Control Water Cushion as part of my BDJ Elite Box recently and I road-tested it right away.

I missed hovering around TFS looking for what's new and hot!  I haven't been going out just to "shop" nowadays due to my intensely busy schedule but I am so happy God gave me ways to still be up-to-date with the things I love to do --- trying and testing out skincare and makeup products.

A photo of The Face Shop Oil Control Water Cushion

For my type of skin, I believe "Cushion" type of foundation is a key for that dewy finish.  I've tested out a couple and this one I believe is the most unique because most cushions I used caters normal and dry skin while this one from TFS is said to work even for oily-skinned users due to its' "Oil Control" function and yet, still moist enough even for my skin type!

The shade I got is Apricot Beige.  I believe The Face Shop came up with 2 shades for this --- Apricot Beige and Natural Beige.  The shade I got isn't a perfect shade for me but good enough to be used daily, I just have to make sure I don't take photos due to the high SPF content which creates a bit of white cast.

AMW says ---
Pros
  • Packaging.  Really nice mirror and the sponge is really made of good quality.
  • Has build-able coverage.
  • Lightweight.
  • Matte texture yet it gives a "healthy glowing" skin effect minus the glitter bits.
  • Dries down quickly upon application.
  • Heavier coverage as compared to all the "cushions" I've tried.
  • Refillable.  So you can just buy refills after which saves the environment and money!
Cons
  • Shade matching, both shades are still light so won't work for users with darker complexion.
  • This cushion will transfer on clothing if not set properly so be very careful. \
  • Oil control may not be adequate for extremely oily skinned users.
  • May accentuate dry patches if you apply thicker layer.
Neutral
  • High SPF.  Perfect because I get better protection, the downside is that, it can give a white cast especially under direct sunlight or flash photography.
Overall
A wonderful foundation for users with normal or combination skin.  It has build-able coverage with matte finish yet it gives a nice glow to overall appearance.  As for longevity, very oily skin users may need to set with oil-control powder or use an oil-control primer underneath.

Tips
  • Use oil-control primers and setting powders especially on areas that tend to oil up. (Ex. T-zone).
  • Apply with dabbing motion with short, quick strokes.
  • Make sure to always step back and check if there are some obvious demarcation.
  • Work quickly especially if you plan to apply 2nd layer, if you have dry patches around your skin, applying 2nd or 3rd layer may accentuate or enhance dry lines.
  • Wash the sponge as often as you can.
  • If like me you have dry skin but wanted to give this cushion a try, make sure to hydrate your skin with your choice of skincare to prevent dry patches from showing up.
  • To keep the "glowing" skin effect, set with a translucent powder only on areas that tend to oil up and leave the rest for that healthy skin look.
Will I repurchase?
No.  Because of my skin condition, I'd go for highly hydrating cushions.

To whom do I recommend this to?
Normal, combination and slightly oily-skinned users.  Apricot Beige would work well on MAC NC15-20 skin.

Where to purchase and how much?
Available at The Face Shop stores priced at Php895.00 (approx $19.90).

Packaging.
I like the simple yet chic trademark of TFS

Just like other Cushoin type foundation, the compact is thick, has a nice mirror and has a plastic "lid" to store your sponge after every use.  What I noticed about these cushion type foundation is how they usually dry faster than foundations in jars (plastic or glass).  So I highly recommend you to use this as your "daily" foundation or else, your money will go down the drain.

Note: Not sure if it's the same with The Face Shop but it happened to me on my Etude House and Laneige Cushion Foundation.

I like to apply with quick dabbing motion concentration application at the center of my face were coverage is needed the most.

Before And After
The Effect isn't as obvious on photos but Apricot Beige is at least a shade or 2 lighter than my neck.  The coverage is really nice though, the finish is matte yet it gives a healthy glow from within.

Coverage of The Face Shop Oil Control Water Cushion is great because it can lessen redness around the sides of my nose and darkness around my eyes BUT, it accentuates dry patches like the area of my cheek very close to my nose!

Applied all over face!
I apologize for the dry lips, the photo was taken after removing lipstick from lips for you to see the effect of TFS Oil Control Water Cushion without having you getting distracted with a lipstick shade.  Too bad though you guys got distracted with my dry, flaking lips!  #lol

What is your skin type?
Would you go for The Face Shop Oil Control Water Cushion
considering how nice to coverage it gives?

Keep smilin'
Stay happy!

  1. There are lots of cushion in the market and I am grateful of that though I am confused with which to buy (oily skin dilemma).

  2. When foundations stain our clothes, it can be pretty annoying. For your skin type, I will recommend you use an oil blotter. It helps, my friend and her sisters use it. At this point, I am sorry I cannot recommend a particular brand. I hope you find the one that suits you best.

I really liked the second foundation. One shade lighter, in some instances is usually good. It's very aesthetic, and I liked how it fit your face.

Darling your lips are not charred. Please, don't be hard on yourself. Great post.

  6. Can you use the tfs water cushion refill into the etude house/laneige case??

  7. Sure did. This is my second refill. I chosed Apricot beige although for my tan skin. It blends naturally & doesn't felt cakey. Most important it does holds my excess sebum from blotting my face....lol
