How to Curl Short, Sparse Lashes + Not Pinching Your Lids

"This is How I Do It" series is here and I'm doing a very simple post regarding eyelash curling!  Everyone should know how to curl their lashes by now right?  But for someone who has short, non-existent lashes and because I'm blessed with more challenges in life!  *laughs*  My left eye is a bit more hooded so I tend to hurt myself when I tried curling my lashes during my younger years!

Just in case, you suffer from the same situation as I do, fret no more!  After years of pinching, hurting and losing some eyelashes, I finally learned the simple tricks on how to deal this situation and best of all?  I'm sharing the tricks I learned to all of you!

P.S. By the way, if you have long, full lashes, get out of here!  *envious* :P

Picking the right eyelash curler
I own several eyelash curlers through the years and expensive ones don't always equate as the best ones, there are some lucky individuals who can get away with inexpensive eyelash curlers but there are a lot of unlucky ones!  (me!)   That's probably the reason why Shu Uemura and Shiseido eyelash curlers are famous because of their ability to "fit in" smaller eyes.

How to know your eyelash curler works for you?  Close your eyes and gently press your eyelash curler as seen on photo below.  If the curve fits the shape of your eyes, you got a nice curler on hand and hold on to it for life!  *lol*

I learned about this trick when I was doing makeup on clients, there are clients whose eyes were curved in a different way both my Shiseido and Shu Uemura lash curlers can't seem to fit thus, no matter how much I try, I can't seem to reach to their lashes.  If that's the case, invest in a heated lash curler like that of ModelCo or Blinc. (I've reviewed both in the past so please click the brand name for reviews.)

Now that the eyelash curler fits, I still have a problem!  The curler pinches my lids!
I kept denying the fact that my left eye is more hooded than the other but after years of pinching *ouch* I've decided it's not fun to curl my lashes and I find myself skipping the process (which is a huge no-no!)

If you have hooded lids, there are 2 ways to curl your lashes without the pinching.
  • Tilt your head backwards while eyes remain looking straight at the mirror, raise your brows and gently curl your lashes.
  • If you have super hooded lids and the "tilting of the head" method doesn't work, use your ring finger and gently lift your eyelid (as shown on photo below) and curl your lashes.  This is a super primitive method but it works!

Once you get hold of all your lashes, what's next?
Press the eyelash curler gently and see if there's any pinching.  If confirmed none, press the eyelash curler closest to the roots of your lashes.  I tend to count from 1-5.  After counting, you're not done yet!

Continue curling the middle portion of your lashes then up to the tip.  I like curling my lashes in 3 segments --- base, middle then tip for a natural curve.

You're happy with the curl, what's next?
Mascara!  Pick mascaras that work for you and always start applying from the base then wiggle the wand upward until you reach the tip.  Repeat step if necessary!

Side View
You get naturally curved lashes.  Also, pick a mascara formulation can maintain the curl of your lashes.  Usually, the super wet mascara formulation tends to weigh down lash hairs.  Pick one that's not too dry yet not too wet.

If you have short, sparse lashes like I do or hooded lids, feel free to share other tips and tricks to our readers out there!  I'd love to hear from you!

Keep smilin'
Stay happy!

  1. We share the same problem! My left eye is hooded, while the right one is not :( My basic problem with it is not about curling my lashes, but lining them. It always looks uneven. I'm having a terrible time doing my eye make up sometimes just to make them look even :/

    1. High five! I know what you mean, but regarding eye makeup, it takes practice to make it look even , sometimes you even need to draw your own "crease" just to make it even with the other eye :)

  2. Hi nikki! this is also my problem, I have very short non-existent lashes hehe! I have a question regarding the mascara, I do agree with you saying that some mascaras tend to weigh down the lashes after sometime (after the hard work of curling them, ugh) what mascara do you recommend to avoid this? :) TIA

    1. Some good mascaras I've tried? Maybelline Volum' Express, then the one from Etude House called Proof 10 Tattoo, and another new discovery from Bobbi Brown. I'll probably write a special post about my top picks for mascaras :D Do wait for it! :D

    1. Both Shu Uemura and Shiseido works for me but for my eye shape, I'm kinda leaning on Shiseido :) I agree on the lid pinching! That happened to me so many times!

    1. Agree, but I prefer to press the curler between the palms of my hands as I may get clumsy at times and probably burn my eyes! LOL :) Teka, parang ang haba ng lashes mo????

    2. Pwede between palms? yes, I've burned my skin one time, ouch! :( No, my lashes are short, effective lang siguro the curler an mascara. wee. :)

    3. Pwedeng pwede, especially sa clients, I won't take a risk on heating them with dryer kasi mas sensitive yung lids, baka masunog ko lids nila ma-korte pa ako! LOL Illegal burning of lids! :)

I rub my hands together para warm, tapos press the curler (head) between my hands, ayon, mas warm! :D

    1. Well, I guess it really depends on the individual's eye shape! Some swore by Shu Uemura, but personally, Shiseido worked better on my eye shape!

  9. Hi Miss Nikki, we share the same sentiments of having short and sparse lashes. I shied away from curlers and mascaras for the longest time until I got hold of Shu Uemura's lash curler. It really works excellently for me especially when used with my Tony Moly mascara. Jut recently, my friends and I had our eye lashes permed and it's been perfectly permed for more than a week now. Maybe you' like to try it too in the future. If you have time you may read about in my blog at http://mykikaystuff.blogspot.com/2012/09/permed-lashes.html
It'll be an honor for me if you do.. :) Thanks so much!!!

    1. Oh Jing, thanks for the reco, I've permed my lashes in the past and I love the result! I agree, you have better looking lashes for the next 3 months! As of the moment though, I'm pregnant, so no more perming or anything related to chemicals for me :D
